About This Search Engine

This engine searches a database of the Jany Renz Orchid Herbarium specimens held by the Swiss Orchid Foundation, at the University of Basel, Switzerland.

The main aim of this database is to allow the collections to be browsed and searched by researchers and other individuals. The database holds limited information from the collection labels, and images displayed at approximately life size which allow detailed examination of the plant itself. The label can be read, but details of the exact collection locality have been removed from the images: habitat details and other information are left unedited. Higher quality images, with complete label data, may be obtained by applying to the Swiss Orchid Foundation. Also, the specimens themselves are available for examination on application.

Individual searchable fields include the Renz Herbarium Number (unique to each specimen, but often the same as the collection number), the collector, the collection number, date, the country, the location (broadly defined), genus, species and notes fields (collection and determination notes).

A simple search query which searches all or a limited subset of fields is also available.

Watch the online help video to see an example of a image search.

How To Use Advanced Search

  • Only specimens which exactly match all conditions will be displayed.
  • For an easy search of all the fields (or a limited subset) use the simple search. This may take somewhat longer to perform as it searches more fields, including notes fields, and may locate synonyms and oblique references to other names.
  • You have the possibility to search for several genera and species in different countries at the same time by separating your search criteria by semicolon.

Genus: Anacamptis Orchis;
Species: pyramidalis; anatolica;
Country: Iran;

This will just show all Anacamptis pyramidalis and Orchis anatolica, which have been collected in Iran.

  • Note that terms seperated by semicolons will be conjuncted by the logical "OR" operator.

Bulbophyllum; Pleurothallis will search for both Bulbophyllum and Pleurothallis

  • An empty field will not affect the results of the search.
  • Wildcards: use an asterisk (*) for any sequence of characters and a question mark (?) for any single character. If no wildcard is used, only exact matches will be displayed.

Aceras can be displayed by entering Ace* or Ace???

  • If searching a notes field you should always enclose keywords with "*".

Search for *photogra* to get all photographs.

  • Upper case (Capital) letters and lower case letters do not affect the search results.
  • All drop-down boxes will only contain those values relevant to the other search criteria. If you choose "Pleurothallis" as genus and "Brazil" as country, only those named places in Brasil with Pleurothallis collections will be listed, and only those species of Pleurothallis collected in Brasil will be shown.
    Some drop-down boxes are disabled if the list would be too heavy without the limitation from an other field. You can avoid this by searching for "*" in the requested field but this probably slows down the searches.

Search With More Options

  • Here you can search on nearly all fields available. But it takes more time to create the ultra-advanced searchform.
  • Use "=" or "≠" to specify your search criteria or to exclude criteria from your search.
  • On the fields "Type" you can choose "any Type" to get all specimens that are a type or "not Type" for all others. The same goes for "Rank".
  • Yes, "Planet" is just a joke. But you can see in the drop-down how many specimen we have.
