Project: Eulophia and eMonocot - a new approach to taxonomy
The genus Eulophia (Eulophiinae: Epidendroideae) comprises ca. 230 species of terrestrial orchids with a predominantly Afro-Madagascan distribution. Previous studies have highlighted the need for reassessment of the delimitation of Eulophia, particularly in relation to the allied genus Oeceoclades. Our research aims to develop a robust phylogenetic framework for re-classification of these genera, with the long term aim of developing an updated and more complete taxonomic treatment. In order to achieve this goal, work has begun on the assimilation of existing taxonomic literature, specimen data and images. The eMonocot Project is developing online taxonomic treatments in partnership with communities of experts, and provides an ideal platform for presentation of these data, maximising accessibility, and enabling participation in this project by members of a broader community with an interest in Eulophia, including naturalists, ecologists, conservationists and growers.
